When Jacqueline Cobbin opens the doors of her new up-scale boutique in the fall, she plans to do more than sell designer-brand clothing at discount prices, she aims to build self-confidence and self-esteem in women and girls.
“Divine Closet,” a collaborative vision of Windsor Village United Methodist Church Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell and Cobbin, an area educational consultant, will open its doors to the public on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. at 5505 W. Orem, Ste. 300, in the Kingdom Builders Center in Houston.
“This has been a 5-year vision and it is finally coming to fruition,” Cobbin said.
The up-scale boutique will offer discounted designer clothing, accessories, shoes, hats and one-of-a-kind jewelry for women and girls, from infancy to size 5.
The 1,600 sq. ft. retail shop will feature an array of fashions from St. Johns to Oscar de la Renta to Chanel for women of all sizes, including full-figure women.
In opening her new boutique, Cobbin faced a number of challenges and struggles, including negative economic forecasts, but credited her faith with allowing her to forge ahead undeterred.
“My goal is to change the attitudes of my female patrons, build self-confidence and create a a successful appearance for my clients, said Cobbin.
An adjunct graduate faculty professor at the University of Houston System, specializing in educational administration and leadership, Cobbin provides leadership training to teachers seeking to step into the role of administrators.
As former program coordinator for “Women of Windsor,” a program at her local church and as an area educator, Cobbin has been approached by numerous women looking for advice on improving their professional appearance.
“Several women have come to me and said that they have trouble putting things together and are just not satisfied with the way they look,” Cobbin said.
Through her new shop, Cobbin will offer on-site training workshops and classes to patrons on professional dress and appearance, making first impressions in the workplace, developing leadership style and skills and making a professional presentation in the workplace.
The Richmond resident’s goal is not only to operate a store, but to provide a training ground for professional dress and appearance for her clients.
She also aims to provide quality women’s fashions at affordable prices.
“Our price point will benefit the public,” Cobbin said.
“We plan to educate women on ‘how to buy.’”
Divine Closet also will carry clothing lines for young girls, including a number of accessories.
“I believe little girls act better when they are dressed up,” said Cobbin.
The store will offer etiquette classes and tea parties to the boutique’s younger clientele.
“I want to provide the kinds of things that allow little girls to grow up and become professional women as well,” Cobbin said.
The shop also will contain a consignment room.
An independent consultant and CEO of Cobbin and Associates, Cobbin offers an array of services to area school districts and for profit, nonprofit and faith-based organizations, including leadership development, teacher training, strategic planning, instructional alignment, school improvement, program evaluation and program design.
Divine Closet will be open Monday – Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
